When I was in the third grade, I came to see Sweeney Todd because my older brother was teching it. A senior director at the time came up to me and told me that I should be in theatre when I grew up and be a senior director. As I came into this department as a freshman and started to discover what exactly a senior director was and the opportunity it entails, I aspired to become one. I hope at the end of the day I have affected someone at least one- tenth of the way previous senior directors have inspired me.
Theatre Two my sophomore year completely changed my view on theatre: I knew then I would do anything and everything to have the opportunity to become a senior director. Senior directing is so much more than being able to produce two shows and lead younger students, but rather to reach out to others and inspire younger students to reach their full potential, to believe that they can achieve anything. My only hope is to impact them as much as my senior directors influenced me.
Ever since I began in the company, I always looked up to the senior directors. They had so much control and poise; they dreamed big and made those dreams reality. I saw their shows, I laughed, and I cried, and I thought to myself, "Why on earth would I not want to have something this amazing to call my own?" I wanted to be so proud of something that was 100% me. Something with my ideas, something my own crazy imagination would create. That’s when it began, the continuous work, show after show. But not once have I ever regretted the time I spent working for what I now am today. I can only hope my shows are as amazing as the others I've seen. I want my show to lead someone the right way. I want my show to inspire people just as I was. I want people to learn from my shows. I know I will be so grateful to have experienced this.
This is Casey Watson's fourth year in the Starlight Theatre Company. During the past three years, Casey has been in thirteen productions with the company where he has acted as well as stage-managed and assistant directed. Since his performance as an island spirit in The Tempest, Casey has loved the theatre. And when he was cast as Benjamin in the children's play The Yellow Boat, it sealed the deal that he wanted to become a Senior Director. Theater and directing have also influenced his life long goals of majoring in film and being a film director. He hopes to someday move to Los Angeles and establish himself as a respected, world-class flimmaker. Casey is excited about his Senior Directing year and looks forward to being a leader and role-model, as so many have before him in the Starlight Theatre Company.
